'songs for my friends' is a collection of 'musical portraits' for solo piano. Each piece is a meditation on my friendship with a particular person. The music seeks not only to capture their personality, but also to explore the essence of my friendship with them. The music is simple, warm, open and beautiful - and like all good friendships is imbued with trust, consolation, empathy, joy and ultimately love. It is music you can listen to closely, follow intently. It is also music you can filter through the background of your day. It won't intrude. Perfect to work or to read to. Perfect for meditation or yoga or just for a little 'time out'. Perfect to help you (or your babies!) get to sleep. Perfect for writing letters. Perfect to slow your pulse. Perfect for a quiet, rainy Sunday. Perfect as a little gift for YOUR friends. I recorded 'songs for my friends' on an old Bechstein piano (1897) which belonged to the Sisters of Mercy in my home town, Grafton. As a child I was in awe of this big black instrument - they called it 'the beast', they called it a 'terrible old thing' - and I was never allowed to play it. Later, as a young man, I returned to Grafton to give a recital on 'the beast' and found it to be an instrument filled with warmth and colour - a little rough around the edges and difficult to tame - but a piano with real depth and soul. A stubborn, wise old grandma indeed. We became friends. She was the obvious choice for this recording. She finally felt appreciated. 'songs for my friends' is music you will not tire of - it is simply a beautiful addition to your environment, be it work or home or in between. It is peaceful and relaxing without synthesised whales, dolphins or storms! It is just me, the piano and my love for my wonderful and inspiring friends.
