Rashid Fanine is a Russian born guitar virtuoso who specializes in improvised music. In his compositions for solo acoustic guitar he combines contemporary classical and ethnic music styles to create powerful impressionistic pieces which evoke the imagination of the listener and create new musical landscapes. Rashid also plays with other musicians in trios or quartets, where he exploits his virtuosity mainly on the electric guitar, creating original dynamic music in a contemporary jazz direction. Born in the Urals in central Russia, Rashid later moved to Saint Petersburg where he had an active professional music life playing in clubs and the theatre. During this time he worked with some of Russia's best contemporary musicians. In 1996 he came to Western Europe where he performed at music festivals in Germany and France and formed contemporary jazz trios in France and Scotland. Rashid immigrated to Canada in 2000 and now lives in Victoria, BC. He has played in Montreal and Ottawa and has given a solo concert at the celebrated Knitting Factory Club in New York City.
