Product Notes

Reign was formed in 1999 as a church youth group band. "Originally we had nine members; A keyboardist, drummer, bassist, 2 guitarists, 3 backup singers and a sax/percussionist. It was cacophony," says singer/keyboardist Jacob Schmelzer. Then in 2001 after the release of their debut album (the self-titled Reign) the band took a hard look at the future. Guitarist Natalie Schmelzer says, "Four of us (Alex - Bass, Jake - Keys, Aaron - Drums, Natalie - Guitar) decided that we wanted to seriously pursue the band thing. The other members decided they wanted to go different directions and so, Reign, as it is, was formed.' The years in-between the first and second albums were very formative in the band's life. Reign played regularly at their church's youth service, Outbreak and began to form a sound that is both unique and relevant. "We wanted to be as good as possible from a musical standpoint and all that live show experience really helped us develop," says drummer Aaron Martinez. In 2004 the band got a huge opportunity that really inspired them to continue to work at making the band a success. They got invited to play at a worship conference/battle of the bands at a huge church in Bogota, Colombia. Reign performed "Take Me All the Way" in front of over 25,000 people in the coliseum and then did a set in front of 3,500 people the next night. "It was a really incredible experience for us. When we got back in the States we were totally excited to get in the studio and make an album. We had a ton of new material and a lot of momentum and we used that to fuel the project," says Jacob. The band began to look into a suitable place to record their album and had a few setbacks but eventually hooked up with producer/engineer Sean McCoy. "We really felt that Sean understood our music and that he was the best man for the job. We were lucky to find a kindred spirit that would help us capture the essence of Reign in the studio," says Natalie. The band began recording Anthem in early April 2005 and also continued to play shows locally and around the West Coast. Bassist Alex Saucedo says, "We didn't know how much work was involved in making an album we could be happy with. Some of the things we thought would take time went quickly and other things we thought would be easy bogged us down. Also, being an independent band we didn't have an unlimited budget but in the end we got something that we are proud of." The band finished their studio work in the fall of 2005 and then the project went into the mixing and mastering stage. "We had really great tracks from the studio to work with so we didn't want to shortchange the album in the mixing and mastering phase. Waiting was the hardest part because there wasn't anything we could do to speed up the process but in the end it was all worth it," says Aaron. Anthem released on Jan. 9th 2006, highly anticipated by Reign's fans and by the band itself. Excited for what the future holds, Reign is ready to promote Anthem and continue with what they've started.
