Life is full of trials, but overcoming them, not wallowing in them, is the key to happiness. So says Roadside Attraction. And even doing something different, just for the sake of doing something different can help a person grow. Those are the reasons behind Roadside Attraction's new CD, "A Nut Unbroken" "This is not a CD about problems," says Phil Johnson, leader of Roadside Attraction. "This is a CD about looking back on problems and realizing how minor they really were." In "Dead City Support Club", Phil describes the trial every artist has gone through: an empty room. But then the triumph of everyone involved with the show (from the bartenders to the band) enjoying the show because they're doing what they love, regardless of lack of audience. "Blue Collar Anthem" speaks to the loss of hope, even to the point that your favorite songs can't cheer you up anymore. "Do It Again", written for the film "Stupid Cupid" describes the perils of a first date when nothing goes right, but the hope that she might still consider a second date. "Zing Zing" is pure celebration, the overcoming of all the trials with a bouncy groove. "A Nut Unbroken" is a distinct departure from Roadside Attraction's past material. The title comes from the fact that when many people hear the group's material they tell them they're nuts and often think they're a little "broken". On this CD, they've become unbroken just long enough to deliver a collection of earnest, sincere songs about the human condition. They draw influence from artists that can find three sides on a two sided fence and work on all of them. The versatility of Prince. The respect for tradition and love for innovation and experimentation of Walt Disney. The melodies, of Bob Marley, as well as his ability to switch from sweet and happy to serious and thoughtful also contributed. All of these went into the craft of "A Nut Unbroken". An incurable sense of optimism runs through the music of Roadside Attraction whether it's loud and wacky, or quiet and introspective. "A Nut Unbroken" being the latter. Life's trials have an ending. Make it a good one, and you too can become A Nut Unbroken.
