Product Notes

Jim Cifelli-trumpet John Loehrke-bass Brian McCormick-guitar Scott Nuemann-drums Mark Soskin-piano Mark Zeray-guitar Robbie Mangiardi is an artist first.A poet, writer, musician, actor, singer and composer who was raised in and around Manhattan, went to Woodstock in 1969,started playing guitar and piano and writing songs-his repertoire includes over 100 original compositions . After several 'lost weekends ' in New York, Robbie went to LA and became a working actor in the 80's-doing stints on the likes of Wiseguy,Murder She Wrote and NYPD Blue under the stage name Robert Mangiardi. In 2001, like a bird coming home to roost,Robbie found himself back in Manhattan on the living room couch of longtime friends and muscical compadres guitarists Mark Zeray and Brian McCormick in Mark's apartment on W. 74th St.It was Christmas Eve.Having a lifetime of experience and incarnations behind him, Robbie watched and listened as Mark and Brian strummed their hollow bodies and then they asked Robbie to take a stab at singing the standard 'Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas'.He did.The floodgates started to open and something beautiful happened. A few months later Mark and Brian got Robbie in the studio where they were joined by Jim Cifelli-trumpet,John Loehrke-bass,Scott Nuemann-drums and Mark Soskin on piano. These guys were good-having played with the likes of Sonny Rollins,Woody Hermann, Grady Tate, Stanley Turentine,Gato Barbieri and Tony Trischka -to name just a few - plus backing dozens in broadway shows and top New York caberet performances.Robbie meanwhile hadn't played with a band in over twenty five years and couldn't read a note of music but as the music charts got passed around the studio and Robbie started singing the playing field began to level. The room started to move.A common language was spoken. The translation can be found on Deep In The Black.Listen as Robbie puts his thumbprint on nine standards and two original compositions including the brooding title track for Deep In The Black-his first ever CD.It took a while but we think it was worth the wait. Most recently Robbie starred in the very controversial British film Death Of A President which imagines an assasination on Preseident Bush.Robbie played the role of Chicago Police Chief Greg Turner.Robbie and fellow actor Ric Rogers (you may recognize him as a series regular on the HBO film series OZ )most recently wrote and produced the documentary Stay Away A Little Closer which chronicles the life of infamous NY playwwright John Ford Noonan and was recently shown both in NY and LA at the NY international Film Festival. Special Note: Jim Cifelli,Scott Nuemann and Mark Soskin all have CD projects available right here at CD BABY-check them out !!! Last but not least !!! Robbie's very own sister has four critically acclaimed CD's on CD BABY-check out the work of Denise Mangiardi and we'll compare notes !!!
