Product Notes

Robyn Randle's album 'SomeBody' has, like many bracing discs, a dramatic arc that informs the music and the making of the music. With no experience in the studio, Robyn approached Chicago-based producer Lou Carlozo (then a music critic at the Chicago Tribune) to begin working on a series of songs that emphasized important personal themes: independence, assertiveness, being a woman of confidence and focus in a turbulent, fallen world. But as the songs took shape, Robyn pulled an incredible audible: She scrapped much of the material in favor of new songs that began pouring out of her. As producer Lou Carlozo recalls, 'The new songs showed a blossoming of talent I couldn't deny. We had to run in the direction of the new material.' Among the most moving songs that Robyn penned in that period was 'SomeBody,' the title track. Anorexia is a tough subject to sing about without falling into melodrama or cliche, but Robyn pulls it off, casting her voice against the sparest of rhythm tracks and spine-chilling slide guitar. A student filmmaker at Loyola University, upon hearing the song, immediately licensed it for a documentary on body image among college students. 'Of all the artists I've worked with in the last decade, Robyn is the most daring and tough to pin down,' says Carlozo, a co-owner of Kingsize Sound Labs (Wilco, Neko Case, Billy Bragg, OKGo, My Morning Jacket). 'She came in as a singer-songwriter without a band or a plan, but she trusted her artistic process completely. I took a lot of notes. I need that kind of courage in my own work.' Compared to the likes of Sarah McLachlin, Natalie Merchant, Shawn Colvin and Chicago-area favorites Sons of the Never Wrong, Robyn has a strong voice both as a singer and a lyricist. She tackles other risky subjects such as child abuse head on ('Down Below') and handles love-song material from a place of poignancy and honesty. ('How Will I know?' asks heartfelt questions about trying to tell budding romance from lasting love.) A resident of the Chicago suburb of Evanston, Robyn wites on piano and guitar, and is penning tunes for a follow-up effort to be recorded sometime in the coming year.
