Layopasana II: Rhythmic Explorations
In this original production, Rohan Krishnamurthy and Ryan Andrews unite the sophisticated percussive tradition of Southern India, the driving rhythms of West Africa, and the exciting and ever-changing spirit of jazz percussion. Featuring vibrant solo performances and dynamic interplay on a variety of instruments, Rhythmic Explorations is set to the South Indian 8-beat time cycle of Adi Tala and at once ties together and extends the boundaries of these three remarkable percussive traditions. Rohan Krishnamurthy Dubbed an "international performer and promoter" of the South Indian hand drum, the mridangam, by USA Today, Rohan Krishnamurthy has performed extensively in the Indian musical genre in India and North America since the age of nine with leading Indian musicians. Having received initial training on the mridangam in Michigan with Damodaran Srinivasan and continuing advanced study in India with Guruvayur Dorai, Rohan has collaborated in numerous cross-musical ventures with well-known symphony orchestras, jazz ensembles, etc., and has presented several Indian percussion summer camps, workshops, academic lecture-demonstrations, and outreach events throughout the US. He is the recipient of many prestigious awards, including USA Today's All-College Academic Second Team, the Percussive Arts Society's Thomas Siwe Scholarship, "Young Artist of India" by Bharat Kalachar (Chennai, India), and "Prodigy in Performing Arts" by the Indo-American Center in New York. An innovator, Rohan has redesigned the ancient mridangam to make it more user-friendly and has published a research article in Percussive Notes, the leading music journal for professional percussionists. Ryan Andrews Ryan Andrews is a multi-talented percussionist from Kalamazoo, MI. A student at Western Michigan University where he studies with Keith Hall and Billy Hart, Ryan is the drummer for the nationally acclaimed student vocal jazz group, Gold Company. Ryan's performance schedule has included recent appearances at Carnegie Hall, Jazz @ Lincoln Center, The International Association of Jazz Educators (IAJE) Conference in New York, and a tour of The People's Republic of China. Ryan is also a member of the Downbeat Award-winning jazz/fusion group Nexus, with whom he has recorded two albums. Besides playing regularly with Gold Company and Nexus, Ryan has performed critically acclaimed groups and artists, including Kruziki Transatlantica Quintet, Stefon Harris, Janis Siegel, Western Jazz Quartet, Greg Jasperse, Roger Treece, and Darmon Meader. Sujatha Krishnamurthy Trained in Indian Classical vocal music in Calcutta, India, Sujatha Krishnamurthy is an active member in the musical and cultural scenes of the Midwest. An accountant by profession, Sujatha's acute rhythmic sense has vastly contributed to Rohan's own musical development. She has performed the jalra cymbals in many diverse musical setups.
