Product Notes

Review by Diane M. Koval in "Entre Nous," December 2000. Music: Ruth Huber's "Spirit of Nurture" The sweet, clear lilting voice of Ruth Huber breathes the essence of the ages into "Spirit of Nurture, " her CD collection of original music. A bright, rich tapestry of sound weaves through the feminist lyrics, displaying the balanced beauty of words and music from this talented singer/composer. Drawing on Goddess and Native American themes, and singing the lives of historically powerful women, Ruth Huber has created songs that touch both the head and the heart. Each note she sings seems to be the first, the clearest, the most pristine. Each word she sings rings with the clarity of a bell. Nothing is to be missed in these artful presentations. From the opening earthly, native spiritual "Maiden, Mother, Crone" to the engaging instrumental beauty of her piano solo, "Motherwit, " Ms. Huber paints wide the range of art and ability in her composing and arranging. The listener is taken by "Spirit of Nurture" from the Hebrew aspect of God, "Shekhina" through the "Four Directions" to the "Tree of Life." The vamp of "Wide Eyed Wonder," with Ruth backing her own singing, makes one long for cold winter nights, firesides, and to be in love. A changeup in "Play With All Your Heart" - inspired by the University of Texas Lady Longhorn Basketball team of 1988 - highlights Huber's gift as minstrel storyteller. From Joan of Arc to Barbara Jordan, the magic of words and music tell her women's tales with harmony and rhythm. Artist June Millington produced the album, save "Play With All Your Heart," which was produced by Huber in San Jose. All songs were written by Ruth Huber, and arranged with musicians who performed alongside the composer. Ruth can be heard in concert with the Rainbow Women's Chorus of San Jose, and on her own at the piano in local performances. Ruth Huber has presented the listener with the most intimate parts of herself in this crystalline, touching, deeply thoughtful, quietly powerful collection of her own songs. 'Joan of Arc' and 'voice of Conscience' are also available in choral score, published by Yelton Rhodes Music.
