Waking for the First Time
'Waking For The First Time is an audio picture-book; a story of life and death and the ensuing questions that any human being naturally wrestles with when faced with their mortality. An easy to follow plot still leaves ample room for the imagination, and raises some challenging issues for the thinking mind to engage with. If you like music, stories, and thinking, give it a shot. You won't be disappointed.' One would be hard pressed to pin down a musical style on this album. From soft acoustic guitar picking and glockenspiels, to screaming 'Zeppelin' type guitar solos backed by a mixed string section, you can expect the unexpected. A broad range of guest musicians contributed to the project, giving the album an enjoyably varied complexity. The plot of the story is simple yet intriguing; something which Lane states was intentional: 'There is a paradoxical complexity that can be found in the simplest of things. Life is always so much more than any generalization, and there is so much depth and beauty to be found in the 'day to day' of life.' While the beauty of simplicity is indeed a focus, the album also looks at the reality of death. Where is hope found in the knowledge that we all must die some day? As the chorus goes in the song 'At The Close of A Day': 'There's got to be something more!' If you're looking for something more, the questions raised in 'Waking For The First Time' may be just the conduit you need.
