Love & Resistance
The music of "Love & Resistance" is one big painting of life, love, loss, oppression, hope, frustration, and the will of an individual to achieve mental and emotional freedom. It blends the revolutionary thoughts and ideals of 60's folk rock with the raw emotional honesty of 90's alternative. The music ranges from hard driving rock rhythms to slower folk songs, and the lyrics project powerful metaphors and new illuminations. The album features Sam Stearns on vocals, guitar, bass, and harmonica, with Elias Magoulas on drums, Gavin Ailsworth on drums, Rene Mijares on bass and Eric Steele on keyboards. Sam Stearns was born and raised in Ukiah, California. His first cassette was "60's Surf" and as a child he loved the Beach Boys and Jan and Dean. As an adolescent, he got into heavy rock and listened to bands like Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Smashing Pumpkins and Tool. This was about the time he picked up guitar and started writing songs. His first performances were with his high school bands Slacker and The Ionians. In college, he delved more into the back pages of classic rock, discovering Pink Floyd, The Beatles, CSNY, and many other creative masters of the bygone 60's era. He formed Isliger and played several hazy house parties. After college, he performed in venues in Oakland, Berkeley, and San Francisco with the band Astral Realm. Sam's first solo album, "Love & Resistance," is now available. The album is about slashing mental barriers, finding love amidst chaos, defying war, and pushing through the crap of the past to find a new space to live and breath. His plans include gigging around the SF bay area, touring the west coast, and eventually seeing the diversity of the world first hand and unfiltered. He currently resides in Oakland, California.
