Who Am I?
Hafa Adai, Chelu!!! (Hello, Friend!!!) My name is Jacob M. Perez aka, 'Scarletto' and I am so happy to FINALLY share my music with YOU!...YOU Beautamuss YOU!!! Smooch-a-rohna-merz, Babies!!! Yes, I am the First (But Not Last!) Out-'Chamorro'-Trans-Male, Sex-Abuse-Survivor, Activist, Recovered-'Cathoholic,' Folk and Queer-Hip-Hop Musician & Matriarch!!! This album consists of two discs that represent two different periods in my life: one is a queer-hip-hop album just recently recorded during and after my transition and the other is my infamous folk album which I wrote during my college years as an out-island-dyke in La Crosse, Wisconsin from 1993 to 2000. I found my second home in La Crosse, Wisconsin because that is where I came out as a baby-dyke and befriended a good number of brilliant and Beautamuss people who accepted me for all that I am and I love them forever! I would not have made it without their love and prayers! Much Love to my Heart and Sawle Sisters!!! By the late 1990's I, Young Scarletto aka, 'Cis/Sis Perez' had written over fifty Folk songs while living and going to college in La Crosse, Wisconsin. In 1994, I discovered Ani Difranco from a very dear friend, Gilly who worked at a Gay/Lesbian/Bi/Trans/Queer Bookstore and had known of her music at the time. Hearing Ani for the first time was epic for me. Because of her music, I knew I was not alone and I had no need to fear anymore of who I really was and especially who I chose to love. No doubt, I was enraged from carrying the scars of being a sex-abuse survivor, former-'Cathoholic.' I was bad-ass dyke in living color, Baby! A lot of people couldn't f*** with me and they still can't, Thanks to God! A few times, I almost slipped away but thank God for my sister, Vickie. Did I mention I have a Beautamuss, Loving & Awesome Sister? Yep! She is my best friend and inspiration of unconditional Love and Life-Force! Shout out to my sister, Vickie!!! Un guiya hao, Nene!!! These albums are about my life journey from the past to present. I hope you enjoy them and listen to them with an open mind and heart! These songs are all original cuts, especially, the Folk album. I was born and raised in the Beautamuss yet, 'endangered island of Guam, or 'Guahan'' from November of 1975 to July of 1993. Guahan is known to have the deepest under-water trench in the world (ask 'The Guinness Book of World Records!') so, right there gives you a little hint of where I'm from. The youngest of two Scorpios, I was extremely fortunate to be brought up in a working-middle-class Chamorro family but I am also no stranger to hard-work or as my nana (mom) says, 'Blood, Sweat & Tears!' I love my parents very much but they are very old-school Catholics and so I was raised with an old-school 'Cathoholic' upbringing to 'forgive the sinner but not the sin.' I will always have great love and respect for my family and even though we don't see eye to eye, the fact is, I have no idea what it's like to have a transgendered child and hope one day they will see me and the life I have chosen as a Blessing and not a curse. So, I'm calling out to those who believe in the power of prayer of any kind, to pray for all our families struggling to accept their queer and transgender sons and daughters and for those just struggling. I, strongly, feel that being Gay/Lesbian or even, Bi-sexual is one thing but it is still completely different from being Transgendered, especially, if your a trans-person of color. But, despite the pain of two different generations of difference, the love remains...Always and for that I am grateful to God & Mother Mary!!! Thanks be to God!!! Biba Santa Marian Kamalen!!! In August of 1998, I attained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Sociology from Viterbo College (now a University) in La Crosse, Wisconsin and worked as a youth advocate and peer educator with G.A.L.A.X.Y. (Gay Alliance of La Crosse Youth). In the summer of 1999, I continued my work as a social worker in Minneapolis by assisting Persons with Mental and Physical Disabilities maintain a full-time job and a more fulfilled life. After growing very weary of home-sickness, I moved closer to home--to San Francisco, California in 2000 and have been here 'since ever since!' I'm currently working on my next album which will be a compilation album of collaborations with other kick-ass, queer artists such as: Marcus Van, JenRo, Katastrophe, etc...!!! And I'm also working on my documentary and a musical, of course, Darling!!! Of course!!!! I have made peace with my past and am now sharing it with the world in hopes of reaching the unreachables and you know who you are! I am also donating 10% of all the proceeds from this album to a wonderful non-profit organization called 'Generation Five' in San Francisco founded by Stacey Haines which is working to end child-sexual-abuse within five generations so, please give, give, give! Chanks alot! I will be putting out the lyrics to all the songs on the 'Who Am I?' Album(s) so, enjoy! Peace!!!
