THE SCREECHES, like all British people, are a miserable bunch of cynical, sexually repressed, embittered, lazy, beer-soaked, emotionally retarded, incomprehensible depressives...... The Screeches first started scraping their fingernails down blackboards at the beginning of 2001, playing for 2 years as The Leeches (until they found 5 other bands had the same name!), As time went by they found their own unique sound - a blending of anglo-ironic art-punk and darkly cruel humor that is best listened to well away from sharp objects and sheer precipices. Having released 3 homemade singles they decided to take the plunge and knock out an album (for no other reason than that they?d organized a US East Coast tour for themselves and needed something to promote). The result was Suck (British Medical Records, BMR004), 10 loud songs to murder your friends to. The good ol? US of A took an amazing shine to our heroes, a shower of accolades (& then becoming an East & West Coast Top 10 college radio band!) soon had The Screeches realizing that maybe being bloody-minded, charmingly foul-mouthed and persistently stubborn could, after all, still work in the modern world. Not bad for an album recorded with no budget ? and not bad for a band with no manager, booker, agent or clue. Not a palm greased, nostril powdered or rectum torn. A second US tour cemented their faith in perseverance and they earned another Top 20 hit with their live album recorded live on KZSU in Stanford. Reviews comparing them to The Cramps, Pixies, Sonic Youth, and Blondie soon came flooding in; breathing such heady vapours did not, however, go to their heads. Instead The Screeches delved deeper and wrote some even nastier songs, re-surfacing with even sharper tongues and deadlier licks, the results of which are here on 'Skidmarks'.
