Product Notes

Primary is the first of it's kind. Never before this acclaimed CD has there been a full length LP of this original music as coined by Senator O'Brien as R&B Punk. Since 1987, Senator has been making recordings in this school of music. Several underground tapes and vinyl singles have been circulated but it was not until 2002 that an official CD/LP was released. This enigmatic singer, writer and producer, Senator O'Brien, has recorded and performed with dozens of named and not so famous artists, and has fronted side bands such as the Sons Of Angelene and the 7 Hole Affair. To assist him in his loyal duties of creation, Senator is joined on this LP by the talents of drum great and producer Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac, (and newcomer Nat Ciuro,) guitarist Waddy Wachtel (guitar fav of Brian Ferry, Linda Ronstadt, and touring-mate of the Rolling Stones,) bassist Bob Glaub, keys specialist Tommy Mars, Patrick Warren, and guitar whiz and mentor, Ron Diego Johnston (Frank Zappa,Jimmy Carl Black, Sir Douglas Quintet.) Together, they made half a dozen "live" cuts at Track Recordings, where you can hear the pure Americana yearnings of O'Brien's style on Leaving California. Also, included is guitarist Little Robert Smith from the Los Angeles New Wave/Punk band, The Cripples. It was there that the young Senator O'Brien got the chance to sing backup for The Cripples fresh from his academia career, and to train his ear and match vocals with his older brother and front man, singer/song-writer turned politician, Shawn Casey O'Brien. Senator's melodic sensibilities are evident throughout Primary, as he climbs, throws and plays with his singing like a possessed panter, with both ease, and a snarling lyrical charm. Everybody's drummer and long admired colleague of the Sales Brothers (David Bowie's Tin Machine and Iggy Pop,) Dwight Payne makes a thundering appearance on White Baby White, which is all recorded live at the legendary 4th Street Recording, and under the command of the world renown producer, Jim Wirt.(Incubus, Fionna Apple..) But throughout this album, the standout recordings of Senator O'Brien's R&B Punk is steeped in the cuts produced by the Grammy nominated (A Bigger Bang by the Rolling Stones) producer and engineer Krish Sharma. With the aid of a heart stomping, irreverent back-line of musicians, Krish Sharma manages, in a live-to-tape recording, at the now reissued A&M Studios, to extract all the right juices from Senator O'Brien voice as O'Brien and band shoots from the hip on Worthless, The Whole World Is Jones'n, Los Angeles, Your Man Is Here, and Somebodies Revolutions, all of which are quintessential maximum R&B Punk. To end out this album is the send-out Your Baby lies, where Senator O'Brien plays out the parts of Longfellow's Evangeline in a stunning vocal turn, reminiscent of a few great R&B crooners. This truthful album, Primary, hits you where you live and right from the start, where it begins it's sly approach with an epic portrayal of Senator stepping into his father's shoes, the Senator-elect from Michigan, walking through the great halls of Congress on the first cut, Washington. Reggie Fisher produced (T-Bone Burnett) this haunting lament, a song that for some odd reason you'll want to play over again and again. Overall, the production and mastering on this album is flawless, if not incredible. Thought it is meant to be played at it's maximum, it does just a well at a softer level. R&B Punk is a mix of American sounds: jazz drums, R&B/Motown bass, big Motor City rock-god guitars, and huge vocals sung in the Detroit-Blues fashion. From slow ballads, with a dose of soul to high temp post-punk Rock n' Roll, all rolled up in the lyrical heartfelt and irreverent! That's R&B Punk! And it's all here on Primary by Senator O'Brien.
