Product Notes

Pianist Shan-Shan Sun's virtuosic performances have been heard by audiences around the globe. A native of China, Sun toured major cities while studying at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music's Young Artist Program; at the age of 11 she delighted the Russian audience at the International Youth Music Festival in Moscow, and performed for President Jiang Zemin of China. In 1991 Ms. Sun came to the United States to study at the Cleveland Institute of Music. After moving to the U.S., Shan-Shan Sun continued to give concerts and make solo appearances with symphony orchestras. Ms. Sun was invited as guest artist at numerous music festivals. Her performances was heard on radio stations WNYC in New York, P2 in Sweden, and BBC Radio in UK. Shan-Shan Sun has won prizes in several music competitions. She is a member of Duo Tengstrand-Sun, First Prize winner of the Murray Dranoff International Two Piano Competition 2003. Ms. Sun was involved in various recording projects. This recording marks the ninth compact disc to her credit. The CDs were released by China Records, and Mindfeel Records in Sweden. About the composers: Nikolai Kapustin (born 1937) Nikolai Kapustin studied with Avrelian Rubakh (pupil of Felix Blumenfeld who also tought Vladimir Horowitz) and later, Alexander Goldenweiser at the Moscow Conservatory. His graduation concert program included Franz Liszt's B minor Sonata and Beethoven's Sonata op. 54. He started composing before he entered the Conservatory, making his first attempt at a piano sonata at age 13. During the 1950s he acquired a reputation as a jazz pianist, arranger and composer. He is steeped, therefore, in both the traditions of classical virtuoso pianism and improvisational jazz. He fuses these influences in his compositions, using jazz idioms in formal classical structures. Kapustin's compositions exceed 130 opuses, and counting. He views himself as a composer rather than a jazz musician: "I was never a jazz musician. I never tried to be a real jazz pianist, but I had to do it because of the composing. I'm not interested in improvisation - and what is a jazz musician without improvisation?" Lowell Liebermann ( born 1961 ) Lowell Liebermann is one of America's most frequently performed and recorded living composers. Called by the New York Times "as much of a traditionalist as an innovator", Liebermann's music is known for it's technical command and audience appeal. Having written over one hundred works in all genres, several of them have gone on to become standard repertoire for their instruments. Li Yinghai (1927-2007) Li Yinghai was one of the most respected in the field of composition and musicology in China. Li had held important positions at major music conservatories for more than 50 years, and helped bring new waves of prominent composers like Tan Dun and Fan Zuyin. He was the author of several books on music theory and harmonic analysis. As a composer Li was a colorist, and often used folk melodies in his works.
