Product Notes

Review by Dan Reynolds (Folk News - February, 2007) Shannon Ames could be described as a modern-day Bohemian - one who pursues a life of artistic hedonism, and yet he balances his whimsy and flights of fancy with every-day responsibility. Shannon's playful wit, as well as his deep sentiments are tastefully conveyed in his songs. There is a diversity of themes and sounds explored on his Bohemian Dreams release (c) 2004. Some songs are light, rhythmic, and full of word play ('Fly Day-Dreamin'', and 'I'm Falling'); others are profound folk ballads that resonate a relatable melancholy ('It's Alright' and 'Pain in My Side'). Still, there are other themes and sounds explored, such as spiritual growth, and the rediscovery and appreciation of love ('Full Sail', and 'Clear'). It is obvious that these songs were allowed to breathe and develop during Shannon's traveling and routine writing and performing. Shannon is currently living in Paris, where he is performing and recording his second full-length CD. During Shannon's travels over the last five years, he has collaborated with many musicians and performed at venues in the US, Europe, and Asia. His Bohemian Dreams release has been successful in his home state of Oregon and also internationally. Shannon Ames is a skilled and passionate singer-songwriter and I anticipate that we will be hearing a lot more from him in the near future. ........... Career Highlights/Vital Stats News Several of Shannon's recorded songs from Bohemian Dreams and his (unsolicited) E.P. Drawing Songlines have been featured on KLRR 101.7's Homegrown Hour radio broadcast, as well as on several internet radio stations. Shannon's song 'Clear' won second prize as best folk song in the American Idol Underground song contest in the fall of 2005... Shannon was also featured on COTV's Good morning Central Oregon Television program in May 2004. Influences/Similar To: Shannon has a powerful, rich, and unique voice that shares a tonal quality and range to the voices of Elton John, Jack Johnson, and David Gray. Shannon's guitar picking and strumming sound in the same vein of Peter Mulvey and Dave Matthews--strong and interestingly syncopated rhythms in multiple tunings. The song arrangements are not oversaturated with unnecessary sounds - the essential instruments, and most importantly, the vocals shine through...similar to the arrangements of Willy Porter and Patty Larkin. Shannon was a writer long before he started composing lyrics, and his words are thoughtful and playful with interesting rhyme schemes, similar to the lyrical styles of Bob Dylan, Greg Brown, and Josh Ritter. Notes on the recording: bo*he*mi*an (noun) somebody with unconventional lifestyle: somebody, often a writer or an artist [musician], who does not live according to the conventions of society dream [dreem] (noun) (plural- dreams) 1.Imaginings while asleep: a sequence of images that appear involuntarily to the mind of a sleeping person, often a mixture of real and imaginary characters, places, and events 2.Waking imaginings: a series of images, usually pleasant ones, that pass through the mind of somebody who is awake 3. Something hoped for: something that somebody hopes, longs, or is ambitious for, usually something difficult to attain or far removed from present circumstances Shannon Ames ~ Bohemian Dreams Altogether, the songs on the CD span back nearly ten years into Shannon's repertoire. The 12 songs on the album were carefully selected to make for a diverse CD--thematically and harmonically. Some songs are philosophical musings; others are testaments of love and friendship; while others are a synthesis - tales of day-dreaming, vagabonding, and the search for fun, freedom, adventure, and human connection. Several songs meet pop standards; while, on the other extreme, others have a tap root growing deep into the folk genre. Shannon is proud of the diversity of ideas and sounds on this project. It is somewhat difficult to type this music, to squeeze it into a genre. For now, he calls it 'acoustic folk'n'roll music'. All songs, minus a few accompanying tracks, were recorded at Shannon's home studio (Broadway Villa #3) in Bend, Oregon from 2000-2004. The mixing and mastering took place at Featherlight Studios with Steven Michael Hartwell as the sound engineer, co-producer, and keyboardist. This was indeed a collaborative project. Several local musicians contributed to this project as well...and Shannon is grateful for their talent and dedication... Jenny Baker (Vocal Harmonies on 'Brotherkeeper', and 'Time to Grow') Jennifer Solman (Bass on 'Fly-Day Dreamin'', and 'Full Sail') Andre Siniard (Conga on 'Falling' and 'Time to Grow') John Cardwell (Electric Guitars, Acoustic Guitars on many of the songs) Dean Prescott (Electric and Acoustic Guitar (leads) on 'Fly Day-Dreamin'' and 'Full Sail') Kevin Blanchard (Percussion on 'Full Sail') Gary Webster (Smokin' sax on 'Fly Day-Dreamin'') Steven Michael Hartwell (Keyboards on "It's Alright", "The Right Side", and "Clear")
