Product Notes

'This band blew me away, hands down.' - Jimmy Jams, Reveal Online, Hollywood. Shut Up Marie is the kind of group that casts spells, leaving their audience pumped full of crazed energy. 'What just happened?' said one Whisky-A-Go-Go-er, after just missing Shut Up Marie, sensing the excitement left on the unsuspecting room. On lead vocals, songwriting, and an occasional acoustic guitar on stage, Annette Marie has a special talent to get your blood going as you witness her command of an audience. She's been playing music (keyboard) since 4th grade, and started playing guitar and writing songs in 1993, after a year-long bout of depression during her attempt at a higher education, and finally realizing that academia was not the answer. Music... that was the answer for her, and remains her answer today. Packing L.A.'s best rock clubs, including the Whisky-A-Go-Go and the Troubadour, Shut Up Marie grabs the audience with awesome stage presence & amazing energy. Shut Up Marie stands alone, with a unique sound that their reviewers & fans compare to no one. Great female-led rock bands of today, including No Doubt /Gwen Stefani, Evanescence, and Hole, all get mentions when trying to find a band that Shut Up Marie can be compared to, but S.U.M. is definitely distinct from all of these bands, bringing in a heavy post-grunge influence that sets them far apart. Shut Up Marie has it all. An amazing stage show, great songwriting, and prolific... Annette herself has written over 300 songs, constant press, and radio airplay that can compete with the majors! Their 2005 full-length release "Gimmie" recently landed at #6 on the FMQB Specialty Albums chart, while their catchy alt-pop single "Short Bus" found it's way up to #7 on the Singles chart. A four-week tenure in the FMQB Specialty Top 25 sets them apart from the rest of the indie bands, and a good chunk of the majors! Charting nationally at both CMJ (College Music Journal), and former specialty chart Fairly Underground (ALBUM NETWORK), their previous release, the 4-song EP 'DEMO' laid the groundwork back in 2001 for their continuing story at commercial radio. S.U.M.'s new full-length CD "Gimmie", is 11 original creations ranging from pop-punk to in-your-face hard-alternative, giving any listener a healthy serving of what Shut Up Marie is all about. The songs cross over from Top 40 to Active Rock radio formats, and can stand strong in each. R&R Rock Editor Ken Anthony attests to that fact, "Shut Up Marie is one of the best unsigned hit-makers out there today. I see them going very, very far." 'By far the best unsigned band in L.A.' - Danny White, All Access Magazine READ THIS CD REVIEW... We asked Shay of UpYours Music to tell us what his 3 favorite songs are from 'Gimmie'. Here's what he had to say: 'Here are my picks: #2) Short Bus is a very good song. In the vein of Bare Naked Ladies? Very cool Cali-vibe, feel-good song with a little humor. Lip trumpet? F*** yeah. You can sell it on that alone. It's a toe-tapper. It has a very polished and professional sound. It's a song I'd first play to my mom cuz I know she'd get it right away. It's very non-abrasive, which isn't a bad thing at all. #1) Everything. This one is my very favorite. It has a Classic feel to it. Old pair of jeans, right away. The music and vocals mix Mazzy Star with a little swell of electronica. Love the vocals because they're not in-your-face or too cute or anything other than perfect. The whole song is a great fit. It puts you on a wave and you're floating. I wish it was 7 minutes longer so i don't have to hit repeat all the time. #3 a&b) Okay it was hard to pick between other tunes like Happy, I Can't Stand, Where Do We Go (I could lean on this one too)........so I went with my fave and what I thought was best out of those type of punk/pop/rock songs and what came floating to the top was Always Wasted. It's damn catchy and aggro! It doesn't stray too far from the Short Bus family yet still connects to the heavy tunes of Borrowed and Happy. Always Wasted has sexy verses and gets aggressive in the choruses. Sublime song structure. The guitar line is hooky, the theme is universal. Fun, rockin and radio-friendly even if it leaves you with some scratch marks. Like I said, it's still quite a toss-up between A.W. and Where Do We Go. They are two songs in the same combination and both get the job done rather swell. These three I pick because they feel solid. They have a 'sound' to them. The production/instruments all fit, the vocals are ready to be devoured and the songs flourish with hooks and catchy grooves. I'd send these kids out into the world and not second guess them. 3 different tunes but not too far apart. Everything is pretty different. That's why it stands out so. Always Wasted makes me want to do a chicken stomp and Short Bus is what I come back to at the end of the day.'
