Simon Spang-Hanssen & Rainbow Spirit Simon Spang-Hanssen, saxophones, flute Dawda Jobarteh, kora Thomas Fonnesbech, bass Ayi Solomon, percussion Mariane Bitran, flute on tracks 2 and 8 Recorded in Copenhagen in july 2005 by Louise Nippert all compositions by Simon Spang-Hanssen Nominated for the Danish Jazz Awards 2008 in the 'cross-over' category 'Danish/African quartet plays a seductive mix of jazz and west-african music. It might sound as a cliché, but it is nevertheless a fact, that one cannot maintain ones hard fought-for and tightly buttoned melancholia and expanding lunar-eclipse, while listening to this african inspired music. You simply get - whether you want it or not - in a happy mood listening to it.'Rainbow Spirit' is not quite 'pure' african music.'Rainbow Spirit' is more of a mixture of modern european jazz and traditional west-african music. Gambian kora-player Dawda Jobarteh and Ghanean percussionist Ayi Solomon are quite central in the general sound-picture, but - I might say- quite as central are the two danes, Simon Spang-Hanssen on saxophones and flute and Thomas Fonnesbech on bass. This constellation- this danish/african quartet- creates a unique, lively, refreshing and seductive musical univers, which both perpetuates the qualities of West-Afican tradition and develops it with an injection of nordic jazz. The music is simple, easy to listen to and sometimes almost coy, but it also has profoundness, character and edge. This makes it worthwhile listening to - again and again.' Ivan Rod Gaffa 2007( danish music periodical ) 'Rainbow Spirit' was born out of the desire of the leaders to investigate a different soundscape and from a fascination with the kora and West-African music in general. Most of the compositions could have been played in other setting, but were arranged specifically for the sound of this group.
