Product Notes

Brazen perfectionists and part-time f***-ups, The Situation finally formed in Philadelphia in 2001 after nearly two years of struggling. The line-up had it's genesis in late 1999, when Christopher Tucker, just released from the hospital (he'd jumped and badly beaten), pumped full of opiates bumped into an old friend from Delaware, Joe Castro at a Beck/Oasis show; he'd nicknamed him 'Joey Marr' on account of his agile guitar playing, a reference to The Smiths' renowned axeman, Johnny Marr. He and Joe decided to form a band and had started to work together when Christopher impetuously left for Los Angeles at three a.m. in the midst of a blizzard early in 2000. He wound up in Silver Lake, formed and broke up four separate bands feeling 'caustically alone' the whole time. He was writing songs at a feverish pace and recorded one with his friends The Brian Jonestown Massacre. He stayed in touch with Castro the whole time, sending him tapes of his new material. While visiting Delaware for a wedding, he arranged to go into a local studio with Castro and a rhythm section and this was The Situation's initial shot at being a band. They recorded a make-shift version of the anthemic '(What Keeps You) Keepin' On?' only moments after meeting each other for the first time. Six months later, Christopher moved to Philadelphia and The Situation officially formed including bassist 'Laz', known throughout the local scene for his cool, rolling, 'butterscotch' lines, guitarist Castro, and John Paul Travis, the kind of drummer most bands would feel honored to jam with let alone have as a full member. The Situation performed their very first show at the now defunct Upstage in Philadelphia on March 1, 2001. The band's signature sound developed quickly as a result of numerous gigs at the Khyber and their desire to forge a sound transcending genre and ready comparison with other acts. After a handful of CDRs containing both 'The Greatest Thing' and 'The Best Prescription Pill Available' circulated, (the latter being referred to as 'absolute f***ing pop genius' by the Philadelphia Weekly) The Situation began to generate their more and more attention. They signed with managers Glenn Manko and Jon Hampton, Bo Tree Entertainment/Standing Hampton, Ltd, later that year, who promptly put them into the studio to record the rest of their debut 'The Reece Nasty EP.' Some six months later, after working in three different studios, the boys turned in definitive versions of '(What Keeps You) Keepin' On?' and the unbelievably raucous 'Why I Can't Relate,' (the audio definition of 'disaffected'). Now they are ready for anything.
