Smiling Buddha USA review: 3/7/06 by Lenny Zieben (A Founder of ChicagoMondo, Composer, Event organizer) Listening to Smiling Buddha USA makes me feel like a kid again: licking ketchup off of the couch and making music with my head. Fusing ska, hip-hop and blazing metal riffs, SBUSA is one of the most exciting bands in Chicago. The energy that they project on the audience is so positive and vibrant that one can't help but to be amazed by them. Their set is as diverse as a Chicago-style hot dog. 'The Loop' with it's energetic momentum has melodic and playful horn harmonies that remind me of 2 children playing. Then Fabrice comes in with his rhythmic rhymes to add one more layer to the already thick groove. SBUSA slows it down with a medium-tempo synth ska, 'Central Standard Time'. The chord progression and horn melodies are so unique and fun that one enters a hypnotic state. Then, there's the politically charged 'Kung Fu Grip' in which they seem to have every evil political leader in their deadly grip. Watch out for SBUSA. They might have you in their Kung Fu Grip someday.
