Product Notes

The label Soulseek Records is an offshoot of Soulseek, a file-sharing application dedicated predominantly to the free trade of electronic music and the promotion of unsigned artists. Listeners can use Soulseek to learn about and sample new musicians they would be unlikely to encounter elsewhere, and artists can utilize the wide user base as an efficient means of distributing their work, getting feedback, and gaining fans. Based upon this community theory, Soulseek Records is a democratic label, with all decisions made by a dedicated group of users who confer via message board, rather than by an committee of businessmen or a CEO. Mission statement Soulseek Records will prove that musicsharing is not the evil demon that many believe it to be, but rather that it can actually be the foundation for a positive new relationship between artists, labels, and listeners. =========== review by absorb =========== what a worthy concept. Soulseek records (set up by an ex-napster) is a network that allows musicians to trade music files and experimental pieces, the result of which is this album -- basically a collaborative effort of joined together messiness. Early aphex twin ambience collides with gabba and all points in between on here, to great effect. I must admit that to be confronted with however million bpm gabba as soon as you press 'play' is never a good thing (i don't do hi-hat) but allowing the record to progress through the tracklisting is well worth it. Bass heavy d n' b (think 'shadowboxing') fades effortlessly into electro-funk, then into ambience and back. One or two of the tracks are as cheesy as a pair of air max bought in romford but as a mix it works well, with spoken word sections and samples segueing the jagged-edges together where necessary. The hard edged strains of urban paranoia, expressed through bass-heavy electo funk, quickly make way for all manner of acid warbling and acoustic nonsense. In short, a fun record. Soulseek records claim they are seeking to facilitate the 'cross-pollination of styles, influences and artistic approaches that breed within the electronic music underground'. not arf. Simply a testimony to the power of the internet that almost makes you want to kiss bill gates. (8)
