Led by ex-Nueva Cat Jody Weinmann and Prairie Spy Ben Fong, The Spectacles make pop music dubbed "blistering" and "totally endearing" by The Gaper's Block. Home is an impressive debut: punctuated by bubbling keyboards, syncopated afro-beats and spare, aching lyrics, it lives up to it's comfortable title. The songs, which swing from the effervescent Byrne/Eno world rhythm of "Slow Down Csilla" to the heroic pop anthemics of "And We Love Dessert," are well-crafted little slivers, drenched in reverb. Stand-out tracks touch on the unrequited love ("Living Room") and teenage awkwardness ("Outdated Model") that serve as the guiding theme for the album, but still manage to come off danceable and upbeat. "N'Heat," even features a mildly offensive house jam, providing an ass-shaking tribute to pregnancy.
