Product Notes

Sweet Daddy's Back-Reissue (2001) From the opening words 'This is the Latest and the Greatest State of Enchantment album', SWEET DADDY'S BACK creates an ever-unfolding aural tapestry. The songs seem to appear in this organic flow of sound. SWEET DADDY'S BACK was released in limited quantity in 1995 on audio cassette only, because that seemed to be the most popular form among S*O*E fans at the time. From the moment of it's original release, 'Sweet Daddy's Back' was a step past anything that had come from the group before. While it's roots in '60's rock, classical, romantic and twentieth-century art music were - as always - in view, this was clearly a significant step into what would be the band's future. 'Introduction' is a powerful and poignant composition for modern orchestra by Spensser Haynes, the principle creative force behind S*O*E's continuing success. Here we meet our guide - a giant perhaps, an fantastic genie - who begins to unfold to us some of the mystique that has surrounded State Of Enchantmentâ?¢ for so long. These musicians have always been overswept by the expanse of their music, and even our guide struggles to endure the sheer scope of the music rising like the tide. Three solid rocking extended tunes follow: 'Sweet Daddy's Back', 'Here I Am' and 'I Know That Look'. This is 'the sound' that made S*O*E original: driving rhythms, exciting interplay of guitar and keyboard, and song structures that actually take you somewhere, not just around and around the same old block. Then there's 'Headroom'. You have to experience 'Headroom'. Perhaps no other single track illustrates the breath-taking sonic quality of this album so effectively. The warmth and cohesiveness of this music was achieved largely through the original analog recording process, and has been retained by very careful digital remastering of each individual track. 'Last Night' let's you overhear the surprising and wonderful conversation of a couple who love each other, but not in 'that way'. In this memorable song is a key to lasting happiness and relationships; it is one of the most-shared S*O*E songs. The unexpected is always expected from State of Enchantment, and 'Sing To You' is the tender delight of 'Sweet Daddy'. The instrumentation, and even the lyrics and overall sensibility, have often been described as Asian. 'Summertime Summertime' was the band's closing number in performances for a long time. 'The Metaphysician' is a mystical as well as musical journey through a dark but strangely compelling land. 'The New Road Song' - written on the road, about the road - is a slightly different glimpse of the travelling musician's world. And, what could be more satisfying (and so true to the nature of these intensely committed musicians) than the intensity of 'Silver Blue', featuring arguably some of the best playing by any rock band ever. Ever. This is the original cut, lovingly reproduced. Lightning captured in a jar. 'Sweet Daddy's Back' is being re-issued because a number of you who know us, who know S*O*E's music, think this is the one that made us more than just another band. Some of you think it's better than anything before or since. WE think it was a wonderful moment in time; and those of you who were lucky enough to share it with us, made it a lucky time for us too. Because of you, we felt we 'could' reach farther. We still feel that way, and we want to take this chance to Thank You for being there for us, and for still being there. 'Sweet Daddy's Back-Reissue' (originally released in 1995) follows the 2001 release of 'Mesculine'. The group have also released 'New Vision Café' in 1998, 'Diogenes' in 1993, 'With Love' and 'Hard Blue Night' in 1991, and 'Live Studio' in 1990. 'With Love' and 'Live Studio' were reissued in 1998 following 'New Vision Café'. 'New Vision Café' is still available. All other titles have sold out, and are not currently available.
