Jackson, Stout : Under These Northern Skies
Stout Jackson is a Madison, WI based jam-leaning, progressive rock band. The band recently completed it's first CD, ...under these northern skies, which is comprised of 12 original songs. SJ has been playing venues in Wisconsin and Illinois since mid-2000 and has been booked at many top regional music venues. Musical influences include Neil Young, Dave Matthews Band, Pat McGee Band and Johnny Cash. Randy VanderHeiden handles keyboards and backing vocals for SJ. Randy blends organ-based instincts with synth experience to help differentiate songs with rhythmic and textural fills and comps. Greg Michlig has played drums in LaCrosse and Madison-based bands since the early 90's, shaping his style in genres from jazz to heavy alternative. Michlig, also sings lead and backing vocals for SJ. Bassist Zach Ehley played the Milwaukee scene as a teen and later joined Michlig in Madison with The Field. His jazz and funk roots drive SJ with moving bass lines and rock steady time, while his interest in progressive rock lends innovative and melodic stimulus to the mix. Eric Brown moves between percussion, drums, and guitar and sings lead vocals on a number of originals. His versatility adds depth and keeps the band's sound diverse. Lead guitarist and vocalist David Heuring uses his familiarity with roots and blues-based guitar to lend an alt-country twist to the sound. His leads vary from free-styling to structured, providing juxtaposed breadth to the band's sound.
