Product Notes

Who is studio62? A complex blend of composer Michael Carroll (renowned in the NYC admusic scene) and whomever wants to chime in - singers, players - they morph at will. For example Summer has two versions on the upcoming full length CD: an instrumental - very nice - and a vocal featuring singing sensation Kwaku Aning. Actually Kwaku is a hard core rocker but he has a pop side that we explore with this act. All come and go as needed but Mikie holds the whole thing together. Michael's spent most of his pro life in advertising and as such has many scars on the frontal lobe. His influences are the Fab Four and many other 60's bands mixed with the likes of Depeche Mode and minimalist dance music (Frank Bretschneider and Rob Rives for instance.) He learned about life like we all did: self-torture and painful dating memories. Studio62's least favorite animal is the Nutria, a large rat-like aquatic rodent with South American origins. Studio62 is so named 'cause it's more than studio61 - no, really it's the number of floors on the Empire State Building here in NYC that we can see from our offices Our studio62 mission? We call it Pop Lounge or Lounge Eclectic (the genre thing is tough for us all). It's music that's suave but also explores melody and compostion. There's a musical subtext that runs throughout all four pieces. Think of the four songs as one song with four sections. 'Sexy' (the tune), once the drums have established, starts with an opening line from the guitar. It's joined later by a longer contrapuntal line in the dudek and finally a synth melody. They all kind of float about until by the end, all three lines are countering each other. Drums, keys and bass keep the groove together jamming on a simple progression - like you used to do on the 3 chord blues. The keys actually are the one stating that 'leit motif' thing alluded to earlier. Love it. The next tune - 'Summer' - has that connection in the bells and hidden elsewhere. There's actually a vocal to this tune that will be released as a bonus track on the full length record. This tune has just an A section followed by a B section. The mood changes from dark to blissful. It's got some trancy qualities but the head trip is that the melody in the A section plays over the B section even though the changes are completely different. Also the harmony in the B section is a palindrome. It's played forward and overdubbed with it played in reverse. Somehow it sounds the same - neato, baby. Tune three - (Cool Guy) This is What I Like - is an up tune. It has a more traditional form - ABA. It also plays a contrapuntal game. The end pad that floats over the main melody is really the intro just stretched out. The guitar riffs come back on top of each other. The bridge has two parts that are really the same - just one is stretched out over the other. The connecting 'leit motif'? - not telling. The last tune 'G' is really all one melodic concept that's restated throughout. The whole band takes a shot at the beginning. We really wanted to see if one could repeat a line over different changes and still get somewhere interesting. There's basically a two note bass line with a deeply echoed guitar line and a theremin-like counter line moodin' it up. The 'leit' thing? When the tune ends, quickly start the CD over on cut one - you should hear the link if you can keep the end of 'G' in your head until cut one starts up...crazy.
