The Super Sonic Samba School is a grass-roots musical collective dedicated to affecting social change through the power and joy of Brazilian rhythm and dance. This CD is a collection of original songs by Andy Villas-Boas put to traditional Brazilian rhythms played by SSSS drummers. Not only is this CD a great example of South American music, but it serves as an important educational tool for learning this style of music. In 1990, the Super Sonic Samba School was founded in San Diego, California. Since that time, the band has become a fixture in the Southern California & Northern Baja California area. The group performs a range of styles: from the Rio de Janeiro Carnaval marching drums of samba enredo, which lead acoustic and ear shattering processions, to the jamming samba reggae and axé of the northeast part of the country; from the mellow, easy listening Brazilian jazz, to the melancholic pagode and boot-stomping forro, all featuring traditional and original compositions. We also perform popular English-language songs adapted to Brazilian rhythms including samba-ska and Christmas carols. We combine these and other styles according to each performing situation as well as the mood of the crowd. The SSSS can be seen enlivening such events as parades, grassroots demonstrations, corporate mixers, festivals, weddings, clubs, schools, and beach parties. Brazilian Samba is a complex combination of performance, social change, and celebration. It grew from deep roots in the history of many lands and cultures, and offers much to the U.S. of today. Building individual performance ability is only part of what it means to make Samba. In the Super Sonic Samba School, group participation and awareness of larger social issues is interwoven with the musical craft. Through the celebration of samba, lives can be changed. Every Sunday, the SSSS teaches a free samba class at Balboa Park, San Diego, California which is open to the general public. Also, we hold various educational workshops and tour all across Southern and Baja California, and the San Francisco Bay Area. The Super Sonic Samba School is a non-profit community service organization. . . . and we have a lot of fun.
