Two forces drive Susan Graham White - music and horses. She is a licensed dressage and event judge who trains and shows dressage horses from her 25-acre farm in Southern Maryland. This setting also provides the nurturing environment necessary for her to write her distinctive style of contemporary acoustic music. Drawing from the depth of material amassed during a lifetime of songwriting, Susan's music has been steadily gaining critical acclaim and popularity. She has won an impressive array of grand prize awards in major national songwriting competitions, and The Maryland State Arts Council has twice recognized her with a grant and the Governor's Citation for excellence in composition and vocal performance. Although Susan is well known for her own compositions, she has also collaborated with many other talented writers, including Tom Paxton, who used one of their co-writes as the title cut for his CD, 'Wearing the Time'. This song and two others written by Susan and Tom are included in songbooks published by Cherry Lane Music. Susan's version of 'Wearing the Time' is found on the Rounder compilation recording, 'Follow That Road' which features many well-known contemporary songwriters such as Cliff Eberhardt, Pierce Pettis, and Christine Lavin. 'Sounding Land', the latest CD from Susan Graham White on Big Bay Records, celebrates a connection to home, land, and love of horses. It is a compelling collection of original songs, recorded with exceptional clarity, and features lush textures of guitar, orchestral strings, piano, and vocal harmonies. 'Sounding Land' showcases Susan's gift for writing exquisite acoustic literature as well as her vocal style and diversity Susan Graham White continues to craft music to touch the heart and to challenge the listener to experience the intensity of her music. As a performer she invites the audience in for a closer look. Her music can currently be heard on XM radio. REVIEW: White's latest release is a paean to shaded woodlands, vibrant seasons and the singular companionship of horses. ...Her voice..is it's own reward, infusing the music with a gentle soulfulness and lyricism. ...A series of flattering arrangements. Some of them are simple, others lush, and all of them help underscore White's uncommon gifts as a singer and songwriter.
