The Bowie State University Band Program is comprised of the Marching and Pep Bands, as well as the Concert and Jazz Bands. Each ensemble functions as a part of a primary musical unit that services the University proper and represents the University in a performance capacity. In doing so, the various bands are responsible for entertaining large audiences in local, national and international arenas, televised performances and regular recordings. Recent additions to the BSU Band Program include Lab Band, Symphonic Band, Percussion Ensemble, Woodwind Ensemble, and Brass Ensemble. The BSU Band Program offers, to both music major and non-music major, tremendous opportunities for musical growth and enrichment. Students enrolled at the University may elect from a full range of ensemble activities. Courses offered within the band program are presented in laboratory style, the ultimate goal being 'performance'. This goal is accomplished through rehearsal and performance of standard and contemporary repertoire, with emphasis given to sight-reading, interpretation, musicianship, improvisation, memorization, and choreographed physical movement.
