As a member of Tar Beach, I am lucky enough to have a unique perspective on the philosophies and processes that go on in this band. From songwriting, to performing, to touring, we all share a passion for what we do. I'll start by providing a brief history; the band formed at Lafayette College five years ago when six fraternity brothers discovered a shared love of music and a desire to write and perform their own compositions. Since then their have been some shakeups and a few tragedies that have shaped the band, until we all came together in our present incarnation a year ago. In those five years we have toured relentlessly, bringing our music to audiences all over the north-east and mid-west. The thought process behind this being that building a grass-roots following and winning over fans one at a time will provide us with a much stronger fan-base and a greater appreciation for what we have accomplished. Our songwriting tends to be a group effort with everyone contributing to the arranging and composing of each song. With everyone's personalities and interests being so varied, all the music of the last 200 years is embraced and experimented with. Rock, pop, folk, funk, soul, bluegrass, R&B, blues, jazz, country, hip-hop, and just about anything else we've heard is open to us and we try to do a little bit of everything. My favorite part of what we do is playing for people. It's an opportunity to share what we love, and have worked so hard for with others, and hopefully getting their respect and appreciation. It's an opportunity to stretch our songs into new territories, and push each other as musicians and performers. Our shows tend to be sweaty fun-fests, where everyone leaves exhausted but happy. Finally, I'll introduce you to the members of Tar Beach. Dave Campos is the singer, the main lyricist and percussionist along with being an excellent front-man. Steve Miller is the acoustic rhythm guitarist, and the main drive behind songwriting and ideas. Bryan Berry is a classically trained violinist that has taken a love of blues and rock and formed his own unique style, Ned Allis is the electric lead-guitarist, and a purist in the best sense of the word, Ryan Lynch is the drummer and also a prodigy that has turned down an education at Berklee to tour with the band, and Erik Thieling is the bassist and a road veteran with years of experience.
