The north-south divide becomes physically VISIBLE. Free-market economic theory dictates that, in order to reduce inflation, certain sacrifices will have to be made. The Tory government decides on the poor and the miners. Britain enjoys a brief return to the world stage by means of a meaningless colonial war, in which Margaret Thatcher wins back some islands, somewhere, and saves her ailing political career in the process. Meanwhile, in the East Midlands, unemployed Kurtz, who once thought the world might become a better place, is getting up late and catching the bus into town to meet his girlfriend for lunch.
