Three Thirteen is the title of a very personal musical project. Named simply after the month and day of birth of it's creator, Mark Harrell. All of the music on this self titled CD, as well as the follow up; 'Uprising', were written, performed, mixed and produced at his home studio. The musical expressions of Three Thirteen are often based upon note fragments, scales, or rhythms, allowed to grow organically, from the center outward. The musical progression of the individual pieces works upon the listener in an almost metabolic manner. A prime example of this would be 'River City'. Layers are placed, one upon another, beginning with drums, to slowly and methodically paint a percussive based orchestral picture of Harrell's hometown of Detroit, Michigan. The result, like the city, is epic in scale, with tragic overtones, simultaneously powerful and disconcerting. Despite what initially seems to be an eclectic mix of music, when heard as a whole, as was the composer's intent, the listener of Three Thirteen will move through a remarkably harmonious universe of moods and internal reflections, a place that must be heard to be seen.
