Form & Essence
Worship that pleases God is so ridiculously simple at it's heart that most people miss it by trying to be too 'intelligent.' Still, it deserves explanation. Though simple, worship is not easy, and I'm not suggesting that it is even common; in fact true worship is quite rare. But it is elementary, and it goes like this:------The almighty, sovereign God of the universe is my creator. He created all of us to bring Him pleasure by serving Him and enjoying Him forever. (that's the same reason the Angels and all of creation worship God, because He is great.) It's one of the reasons we worship Him as well, but there is so much more, something unique, a privilege and opportunity that God has given us that angels and all other creation will never understand.------Both by inheritance and choice I am a vile sinner before this holy God. Because my sin separates me from loving relationship with my creator I was hopelessly doomed to eternal separation from Him, except that God, in His infinite mercy decided to come down to earth in person to satisfy the justice of His own wrath against me. He served my death penalty, by essentially condemning me to death and then jumping in to die in my place. This might be crazy sounding stuff, but it is the truth of scripture.------Jesus paid it all. He's given me my life back, not to do as I please, but to do what I was created to do. He's now my King and I want to live my life for Him. That's not to say I'm perfect, for I am all too well acquainted with what a rotten sinner I still am. But He's changing me continually to become more like Jesus. Instead of living for myself, He's changed my life aim to point people to Jesus and do what we were created to do, which is to revere and obey Him as our loving God, who both commands (for our own good) and deserves the deepest praise and devotion we have. He's a God who's serious about sin, but when we repent He turns our sorrow into rejoicing. In fact, the greatest joy in all the world is knowing for certain that your sins are forgiven, because you've chosen to follow Jesus, and believed that He was crucified, died and came back to life, and now brings us the promise of being with Him forever.------- And that's why I do what I do today as a worship leader/ pastor/singer/songwriter type-style-person. Christianity can be so blah and irrelevant sometimes, but I'm convinced that this is because so many have not truly entered into a worship encounter with the living God where they understand the reason we can dance and sing for Him. The Lord is great and greatly to be praised! Christians ought to know how to party! And it's all because of His greatness (who He is) and his goodness (what He does). Therefore, let us come with confidence before the throne of the King and never cease being in wonder, telling Him how great He is and how grateful we are.
