Five Seconds to
College parties are the stuff of random hookups and getting drunk. For local punk band Toybox, one Arizona State University shindig also meant the solidification of their band. All of Toybox's members are former ASU transfer students hailing from Japan. Guitarist Naoto Yonezawaand drummer Celica Nakamura formed the band about three years ago after a Sum 41 concert. As other members left to move back to Japan or for personal reasons, they were in search of a vocalist. Yonezawa saw vocalist-bassist Yo Yamakawa at lunch and invited him to a party that night. The strangers hit it off. 'I was having a good time, and I was drunk, and Naoto brought out his acoustic guitar and started playing famous songs in Japanese,' says Yamakawa, 25. 'I somehow started to sing. We didn't practice or anything, but I just sang because I like to sing, and he was like, 'Oh, this guy can sing?' ' Since then, Toybox recorded a five-song EP titled, 'Five Seconds To...' and has played all over the Valley. The group plays some songs in English, some in Japanese and some with mixed lyrics, but all have a high-energy sound.
