Product Notes

6 STRING JOHNNY 'SURF 'N' TURF' is the first CD released by John "6 STRING JOHNNY" Tonin, Ontario GUITAR WARZ champion, music teacher to three generations of guitar players in the Guelph area, and considered the city's 'Wizard of the six-string'. This CD marks John Tonin's debut into the world of recording of original music Even though this album has been a long time in coming, you won't hear John complain. This project has grown naturally from a lifelong love of music and a desire to make people happy. That, and the acceptance that everything must come in it's own time no doubt comes from the fact that the front man for this surf rock band is also a meditation and yoga instructor. All signs headed to this day for John. 6 STRING JOHNNY & the JALAPENOS is the musical destiny of a man who has spent his life making music, touring, performing in various genres, and making friends along the way. His life in music reads like a road trip of different landscapes. From the glitz of Las Vegas to the grit of New York City, and from the attitude of the early 80's West Coast music scene to the simple joy of making music for children. The blending of all these experiences was then poured into a group of seasoned musicians to create a full album of spicy surf tunes and earthy turf songs. 6 String Johnny & the Jalapenos, is a cohesive unit which combines all the different styles of Johnny's artistry. In it, you can hear the influences of early 60's instrumental Surf Rock as well as his weaning on the Beatles and years of Flamenco study. It's all in here! REVIEWS NEW GANDY DANCER- THE MAGAZINE FOR ROCK INSTUMENTAL MUSIC [ISSUE 54] From Guelph in Ontario comes this exciting talent on his first CD. John is a guitar player and a guitar teacher and this is a series of his invigorating interpretations of surf music. There's bits of everything absorbed like The Ventures, Dick Dale, Duane Eddy, classical and even flamenco, but the beauty is of the original music [most of it is] and the fresh, clear, active toe tapping sounds plus the fast, tricky and clever licks that just hypnotise. The supporting musicians are great too. Trailblazer is a stoccato surfer and Surfer Across the Mersey has a Paul Johnson feel to it. Surfer Shuffle is a fast quirky rock guitar feature with lots of good things happening and for us the neatest track is the cool Spy Guy- tuneful, honest and immediately in your face with it's strong melody. Shoreline Serenade is a meaningful tight Duane Eddy sound and Mike Beddoes of Vancouver's Falcons will savour the rocking and rollicking of Sierra Sunset. Ethno Surfario 2001 is a wonderfully concocted medley of none originals for once in Hava Nagila, 2001,Greensleeves, Rap City and Volga Boatman and it is a real album high spot. Marvellous CD. Get the pen out and write for it - it is an indispensable Christmas present to treat yourself with. **** [Davey] LIMEWIRE Kicking off with a short guitar scales from a very young John '6 String Johnny' Tonin, this debut CD from the man and his band proceeds to demonstrate that those years of woodsheddin' have paid off big time! We're in high gear with fine guitar double picking on the Western rocker 'Trailblazer'. Funky guitar and Mexican horn rock dominate 'El Toro' while 'Surfer Shuffle" is a blues guitar, piano, and organ 12 bar shuffle. More satisfying is 'Spy Guy': a Mancini/spy type theme with nifty minor chord progressions AND the muted guitar notes and whammy bar washes of "Ska Beach". Shades of Duane Eddy with a synth background on the 'Sleepwalk'-like 'Shoreline Serenade' blend nicely with the more Tex-Mex guitar showcase 'Open Up [St. Peter]' 'Sierra Sunset' is big desert music- from the low string twang to the shimmering rhythm guitar-it's beautiful! 'Chuckwagon', a polka country rocker offers up some chicken scratchin' pickin' and segues nicely into another duster instrumental 'Coyote Trail'. Bringin' us to the end is 'Ethno Surfario 2001': a 3 ½ minute medley of classic themes like 'Rap City', 'Greensleeves' etc All in all, 'SURF 'N' TURF'is a tasteful & rockin' instrumental CD which grows on you with each listen JETHRO TULL-Personal Correspondence Dear Six-string Many thanks for the kind gift of your debut solo album which I had a chance to listen to on the latter part of our recent tour. It was a refreshing return to the guitar sounds and melodies we all grew up with and I immediately posted it to our guitarist Martin Barre since I know that he is still a fan of that tuneful guitar style which you employ. Best wishes with your musical career... Yous sincerely, Ian Anderson.
