Al Davis has been composing, arranging, producing, and performing contemporary and traditional religious music in the Washington, D.C. area for thirty years. He has performed and recorded live with nationally known artists, popular local choirs, and some of the best studio musicians in the industry. Al's first project for a major record label came in 1989 when Wajii Records chose him to write arrangements for and perform on an album by the Five Blind Boys of Alabama, featuring the legendary Clarence Fountain. Another album and two live performances with the group followed in 1990. Al's exceptional musicianship led to his working with three other Wajii artists: The Gospel Truetones, Mildred Clark and the Melodyaires, and Eugene "Flip" Forrest. In the fall of 1989, just prior to his work with Wajii, Al's own label, Njideka Music, released Soul Food, an album that featured the Inspirational Choir of Washington's world-famous Bibleway Temple. Al was principal pianist and band director for the group and performed all keyboard parts on the album. He also wrote the score, performed on nine of the ten songs, and generated the orchestration. Al studied jazz and classical music under George White, the famed late director of the Washington Redskins Marching Band, and studied piano privately while at George Washington University. He later studied and collaborated with revered gospel music scholar Pearl Williams Jones. During the 1980s, Al collaborated with contemporary gospel recording artist Danniebelle Hall and performed on the albums of rhythm-and-blues/pop artists Keith McGirt and James Michaels. Al's song Slammin' Doors was the title song of McGirt's album. Al is developing the Njideka Music song catalog, while also directing music for Washington's historic St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church. In 2005, he released Hymns of the Church: The Cross, a reminiscent and inspiring collection of piano music that commemorates and celebrates Christ's sacrifice.
