Product Notes
Cyrano de Bergerac - Digitally Remastered Cyrano de Bergerac is the 1950 black-and-white feature based on the 1897 French play of the same name by Edmond Rostand. It is the first motion picture version in English of Rostand's play, in which a charismatic swordsman-poet helps another woo the woman they both love. Recreating his stage role, Jose Ferrer stars as Cyrano, a 17th-century French cavalier, poet and swordsman. Cyrano is madly in love with the beautiful Roxanne (Mala Powers) but assumes that she could never love him back because his massive nose makes him physically unattractive. Another soldier, the handsome Christian (William Prince), also loves Roxanne but he is unable to put two consecutive words together to woo the charming young woman. Cyrano agrees to help Christian win Roxanne by feeding him the right words for his midnight courtships and love letters; in this way, Cyrano can vicariously express his own ardor for the fair lady. Years later, Cyrano's deception is revealed to the woman he loves. He dies in the arms of his beloved Roxanne, who realizes too late that she has loved Cyrano all along.
