Product Notes

'The first time I ever heard Dave Leatherman sing, I knew he was exceptional. What I didn't know was the extent of his musical background. A North Carolinian, Dave is steeped in the vast traditional music of his home state's heritage. A performing musician since the late 1960's, he joined the North Carolina Bluegrass band, Tri-County in 1973. After a seven-year Air Force stint, Dave moved to Arkansas and began his long time association with the Bluegrass band known as The Stone County Boys. With his commanding lead vocals, Dave rules this CD with powerful compelling mastery. From the ethereally haunting 'Barbara Allen' to the archaic murder ballad 'Pretty Polly' Dave's voice is strong and clear. He has three times been named SPBGMA's traditional male vocalist of the year (1979, 80, and 81). No stranger to the many Fiddler's Conventions throughout the Southeast, including the world famous Union Grove Convention, Dave has placed among the winners for many years. Make no mistake, by any standard; this man's voice is universally appealing. A staunch traditionalist, his songs tell spine-tingling stories that take us back to a time when people sang to soothe their soul and that of their friends and neighbors. Genre favorites such as 'Sweet Sunny South' and 'The Rebel Soldier' make this CD a traditional treasure Even tho this age of technology sometimes seems to overpower us and overwhelm our senses, Dave Leatherman leaves no doubt that...the human voice is still the most powerful force in music. If the mountains could sing, they would sound like Leatherman.' Pat J. Ahrens - Freelance Writer and Author, 1996 Recipient of the South Carolina Folk Heritage Advocacy Award Also on this CD, you'll hear: Ferrell Stowe playing the Harlow Resophonic Guitar (dobro). Ferrell's a ten time SPBGMA award winner. Rick Otts on banjo and vocal. Rick's played with such musicians as Ronnie Stoneman and Jerry Van Dyke. The mandolin and vocals of Jack Kincaid, a star of RFD TV and a musician who has played with some of the giants of Bluegrass. Upright Bassist Mike Dunbar, once a member of Red, White, and Bluegrass, has played on stage or in the studio with folks like Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Razzy Bailey, Kathy Mattea, John Prine, Townes Van Zandt, Jethro Burns, and Steve Goodman. If you like Traditional Bluegrass, Mountain, and Folk Music, you'll love this CD.
