Recorded in London at a moment when British R&B bands were pushing toward psychedelia, it captured the band in transition from their blues-club roots to a new, experimental sound driven byJeff Beck's groundbreaking guitar work. Songs like Over Under Sideways Down and The Nazz Are Blue mixed blues energy with distortion, Eastern scales, and unusual time signatures, defining the sound that would later feed into both hard rock and psychedelia. Beck's use of feedback, sustain, and fuzz effects gave tracks a sense of invention that influenced everyone from Jimi Hendrix to Jimmy Page, while songs like Hot House of Omagararshid and He's Always There were full of studio experimentation courtesy of Paul Samwell-Smith's tape loops, droning guitars, and haunting harmonies.
