Product Notes

PAL is Paul Adrien Le Bel, a singer/songwriter of 35 years. A lover of late '60's & early '70's psychodelia folk/pop/rock. PAL has written over 400 songs, 50 in collaboration with 3 other writers. PAL has performed in band or solo form over 1000 times, though does so only occasionally now. Born in Los Angeles, CA, he spent his childhood and adulthood in Maine, spending his 20's living in Miami, Boston & Los Angeles. He now lives in a one room cabin in Maine working as a cook. He does not drive and he has no phone. MINE is a compilation of PAL original writings put together from recordings PAL has made over the last 10 years. PAL recordings: Ten Past Ten (14 songs) ©93 (4track) Toy Songs (20 songs) ©93 (4track) Bodies (14 songs) ©94 (4track) The Dreamers (14 song proto) ©94 (4track) Turnaround (20 songs) ©94 (4track) Naked Smile (20 songs) ©95 (4track) Scratches (upon a kiss) (32 songs) ©97 (4track) Expo ©98 (CD collection of 4track recordings) Dome (9-songs) ©00 (8track digital) Music To Vacuum By (13 songs) ©02 (8track digital) The Aborted Eliza Project (pt.one) (7 songs) ©03 (8track digital) Ultimate Being (or the next best thing) (5 songs) ©05 (8track digital) Joungluers Soundtrack (1of5) (4 songs plus) ©06 (16track digital) Joungluers Soundtrack (2of5) (4 songs plus) ©07 (16track digital) Motel Music (6 songs) ©08 (16-track digital) Mine (14 song collection recorded between '00 & '08) ©09 (16track digital) Joungluers Soundtrack (3of5) (4 songs plus) ©10 (16track digital) (Some of the songs from the 4track recordings were re-recorded on the digital.) PAL bands: Blonde Bait (Los Angeles, CA) '81 Plain Talk (Portland, ME) '83-'84 Pal Inc. (Portland, ME) '85-'86 Other Peoples Fingers (Los Angeles, CA) '86-87 Instant Water (Los Angeles, CA) '88 Flamingo Smile (Portland, ME) '90-'92 The Dreamers Of Oblivion (Portland, ME) '91-'93 Shadows (Portland, ME) '93 Flamingo Smile 2 (Portland, ME) '94-95 Pality (Portland, ME) '96-'02 (there are recordings in one variation or another of all bands) Some critique: "When PAL is good it's because he forges well beyond conventional arrangements for voice and acoustic guitar."BG "PAL's outlook is quirky and if I can warn of anything adverse it's that that British psychedelic sound of the first wave is prevalent, so if that doesn't put you off..."BG "This is highly intelligent music, PAL's psychedelic folk-rock is exceptionally well crafted with layers of vocals and instrumentation painstakingly woven together to create an experience that rewards both casual and close listening."CB "Marika evokes the damaged elegance of Big Star's Third Sister (Sister Lovers), then dissolves into a tripped-out segue worthy of Barrett-era Floyd before returning to the original pop structure and fading with an extended, stately outro. Ghostly vocals float above the sonic landscape grounded by guitars and spiked with xylophone and piano bits. It's an extremely well-composed seven minutes of psych-pop bliss."CB "there are solid performances, first amongst those is the floating Rumoured and These Word (don't make no). Love Lies (like bone through skin) presents the most vivid image and is one of the most interesting songs musically. Picture Perfect sounds as if it might have escaped from the mid-60's psychedelia."BG "Rumoured breezes in on some lovely acoustic guitar and boasts a beautiful bridge to an edgier, heavier chorus. Like Marika, Rumoured dissolves into and out of a dreamy middle passage full of ethereal vocals, plinking percussion and sonic oddities that keep the ear entertained."CB "there's a certain insightfulness to his songs because PAL is so absorbed by his subject matter."BG BG wrote for the now defunct Sweet Potato and reviewed 4track recordings. CB writes for thebollard.com and reviewed digital recordings. Compiled by Sebastian S Hilliard.
