Product Notes

Pat Wictor stands out in a crowd. Seen onstage, he cuts an unforgettable figure. With shoulder-length red hair and a zen-like calm, he sings in a pure tenor and makes his instrument, the unusual lap-style slide guitar, 'sing' back to him. He can bring a room to silence, effortlessly weaving several parts on his guitar. And his songs, drawn from the deep wells of rural blues, gospel, and country music, linger in the mind long after he's done. As songwriter and singer, Pat echoes tradition-minded musicians of the present and past, while creating a distinctive voice of his own. His combination of bluesy and literate writing is reminiscent of Chris Smither. From Dave Carter and Bruce Cockburn he draws a penchant for symbolic and spiritual imagery. From Kelly Joe Phelps, a grab-bag of intricate guitar sounds, including lap-style slide guitar. The music of country pioneers Dock Boggs and the Stanley Brothers, and bluesmen Son House and Fred McDowell, all influence the memorable melodies and language of Pat's original songs. In touring around the Northeast for the last three years, Pat has played at numerous stops on the 'folk circuit,' including The Point (Bryn Mawr, PA), the Minstrel Coffeehouse (Morristown, NJ), and the Nameless Coffeehouse (Cambridge, MA), as well as numerous other coffeehouses, libraries, bookstores, and municipal festivals. His playing has attracted the notice of musicians who've sought his slide guitar sounds for shows and recordings, and radio deejays (at WPKN, Bridgeport, CT; WFDU, Teaneck, NJ; WXPN, Philadelphia, PA; and others) who've enjoyed his live performances on the air. As a finalist in the Solarfest song contest, and a semi-finalist at the Mountain Stage New Song Contest, Pat is also gaining recognition for his songwriting. Pat is touring in support of his fourth CD, titled Waiting for the Water. The recording features the Civil War soldier's lament, 'Don't Dig My Grave Too Deep' (by Rich Deans) and the gospel-tinged 'Love Is the Water,' along with several other originals and covers of songs by Skip James, Fred McDowell, and Son House. Pat's tour will take him throughout the Eastern U.S. and beyond in the months after it's September 2004 release.
