Senegalese-French academic Mara (Kayije Kagame) journeyed to Saint Omer for the trial of Laurence Coly (Guslagie Malanda), an immigrant student accused of leaving her 15-month-old child in the Berck surf to be taken by the tide. Intending to craft a Medea allegory out of the proceedings, the pregnant Mara increasingly finds Coly's circumstances hitting disturbingly close to home.
