Product Notes

Sam Pannunzio was born in 1949 in Colorado and was exposed to great musicians very early on. He remembers especially the Bill Evans Trio. Long Piano introductions, Bass Player going in and out of traditional 4/4 feel and drummers that played complimentary styles to the music. "To play with less traditional rules was complete creativity for me. On the negative side at that time it was difficult to team up with other musicians who felt and played the same. When I couldn't find those with the same ideas I had to turn them on or teach them the concept of playing in a complimentary style. The term Interplay is probably the best word that describes this type of playing. For this reason and to this very day I am very selective with whom I play with. In the early 1970's my new wife and I came to the Northwest. Seattle had a very vital music scene and it was wonderful playing with all the great instrumentalists, studying and enjoying life as a full-time musician. When you weren't getting paid for a gig you were playing in countless rehearsal bands just for the sake of playing. That's when I met this very young bass player Mark Bullis. He was very energetic and willing to play at any time. We would listen to recordings but most importantly just play play and then some. Mark was such a great fit for me musically, and we played many gigs together. At the end of the 80's I was back in Colorado raising a family and there I started to compose my own tunes. These were somewhat similar to standards. All the tracks but one on this CD are my own compositions. In 2009, 20 years later I took a trip back to Seattle and looked up my buddy Mark. He invited me to rehearse at a Drummer friend's house. As soon as we three started to play together we realized that we had a great feel for one another, and I was delighted that the Interplay I had been searching for was happening. Lionel Kramer was the drummer. Lionel is a very sensitive musician who plays a precise style for my kind of music. When we make music together it's like one person playing all three instruments. Our dreams were coming true. We went into the studio and recorded this album in the fall of 2010. Then our dreams were shattered. Our friend Mark passed away suddenly in January 2011 and will be sorely missed. We dedicate this CD entitled "GOIN' HOME" to the loving memory of Mark Bullis. May he rest in peace. We know you are now safely at Home." Sam Pannunzio.
