Product Notes

From the band: There often occurs during the experience of any band that stays together any length of time, a special relationship with a certain venue where they play again and again. Something just clicks between the staff, the audience, and the band, and the relationship becomes some kind of ongoing process that acquires a life of it's own and influences the musical direction of the band. We have enjoyed this partnership with The Historic Orchard at Altapass for several years. On any given weekend at The Orchard, you might hear an old country honky-tonk band, a hyper-speed bluegrass band, a gospel quartet, an Elvis impersonator, a Broadway show tunes revue, or us. Yeah, once again, there's Slight Departure, doing that music that no one can pigeonhole. Is it Old Time? Is it Bluegrass? Folk? C & W? Western Swing? It is every bit as broad as the background of the people who come to enjoy The Orchard. About all we can say is, no matter what it is, it is filtered through the traditional acoustic instruments indigenous to this part of the mountains. The collection of songs for this CD were developed and nurtured during our appearances at The Orchard over the past several years. We will not say 'matured' like a fine wine, because, every time we play there, the song comes out different depending on what's going on in front of us. For instance, we never would have thought of putting Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue on a CD except for the folks at The Orchard who, to the surprise and delight of onlookers, came up and started doing 'The Charleston'. Alan was impressed by the historical bent of The Orchard and penned Big Tom Wilson about an early North Carolinian mountain man who discovered the drowned body of Elijah Mitchell on nearby Mount Mitchell, now named for the man who determined it to be the highest peak east of the Mississippi. Some friends contributed to A Waltz for Uncle John, Marshall Ballew's heartfelt remembrance of singer/songwriter Jerry Garcia. Sherrill Keever's June Bug Two Step was recorded in the studio right after he acquired his mountain lark (he calls it his "dulcilele"), and which we all agreed had to be included as part of this inspired process of reinventing traditional music. Alan picked up Down the River Uncle Joe from Don Pedi down in Glen Rose, Texas. The rest of the songs are pretty self-explanatory. They are favorite dance or listening tunes that received such a response at The Orchard, that they became part of our repertoire. So sit back and listen, or get up and dance. But come see us, or anybody else for that matter at an Altapass near you. You never know what's going to happen. About the band: Slight Departure is an acoustic quartet consisting of Alan Darveaux on dulcimer, Sherrill Keever on guitar and mountain lark, Jim Clark on bass, and Jeff Haslam on mandolin, dobro and resonator mandolins and Cumbus banjo mandolin. They are slightly departed from any particular category of music. Alan's background is in folk and plays his dulcimer more like a guitar than in the traditional style. Keever grew up with the Beatles and Doc Watson and gives them the Polish. Jeff comes from 60's folk with Pink Floyd and Grateful Dead influences and brings out the kid in everybody. Jim grew up with rock, blues and jazz influences and is the steadying influence. The four of them offer a blend of fine harmonies, a wide spectrum of songs and a whole lot of fun.
