Product Notes

"Range of Motion - Echoes of the Past" is really two CDs in one. In 2002, I created my first CD, which was titled "Just Playin' With Myself." It was a fun first effort, and I gave away all 23 copies as gifts to friends and family. With a little recording and mixing experience under my belt and a brand new djembe in my hands, I then completed another CD that was titled "Range of Motion." I was a little disappointed in a couple of the tracks on "Range of Motion," and I was lamenting the limited distribution of "Just Playin' With Myself," especially since the song "Pagan Women" had gained in some popularity in my social circles. I had also lost all of the computer files I had created for the CD cover, insert and label for "Just Playin' With Myself," but I still had all of the audio files. So in 2003, I trimmed off the pieces on "Range of Motion" that just didn't work right and added some of the best tracks from "Just Playin' With Myself" to create this CD that is available here at CDBaby: "Range of Motion - Echoes of the Past." The songs are all original works and, indeed, most of them are improvised. I take a certain amount of pride in the fact that it is all acoustic. I do not use synthesized sounds or repetitive drum machines in my music. I record one track on a real drum, play it back, and record another track alongside the first. I keep doing this until is sounds right and then I mix it down and get it ready for play on a CD. I admit that some of the songs on this CD have a rough edge about them, but I do not believe that this diminishes the pieces in any way. The primitive aspect of percussive instruments seems to lend favorably to these rougher pieces and people still enjoy listening to them. And there are some well-polished pieces as well. There are several strong rhythms on this CD, as well as some of my favorite recorder (flute) pieces and poems. And, of course, there is the song "Pagan Women," a rather notorious piece of work that continues to gain in popularity (and notoriety). Plus, the addition of my djembe to my drum collection added greater depth to my sound and improved the overall quality of my music. The instrumentation on this CD includes: djembe, doumbek, my 'big drum,' Moroccan clay drums, bongos, Kid's Konga, African slit drum, gong, rain stick, shaker egg, Catspaw, sticks, dijeridoo, jaw harp, soprano recorder, alto recorder, tenor recorder, voice and vocalizations. "Range of Motion - Echoes of the Past" reflects the beginnings of my exploration of this artistic medium. It clearly demonstrates the evolution of my skills at playing, recording and mixing, and it sets the stage for my subsequent CDs (also available here at CDBaby). If you enjoy percussion and flutes, but more importantly, if you have ever danced to the drums around the campfire or at a concert, then I believe you will enjoy this music. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed making it. Peace, Windwood A little bio: Windwood lives, works and plays in the great state of Utah. He is a lover of music and rhythms. Windwood is now an initiate on the Bardic Path and continues to explore just what that means... He loves good food, good family, good friends and good times, and he loves to drum and sing around a campfire.
